His musical influences stemmed from genres like Maskandi and Scathamiya, finding inspiration in artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemisi, and Imithende.

Although academics didn’t highlight his strengths, Big Zulu’s journey after basic schooling led him to driving taxis. However, his passion for rap music gradually intensified over time.

After cultivating a profound passion for Inkabi rap music, Big Zulu made a pivotal decision in 2009, bidding farewell to his taxi driver job to fully immerse himself in music. His exceptional talent in the genre became evident when he clinched the top spot in the rap contest hosted by ‘Back to the City‘ in 2013, securing the esteemed title of King of Rap.

By 2015, Big Zulu had established himself as one of the leading figures in South Africa’s rap music scene. His ascendancy led to signing a deal with Universal Music Records following a significant encounter with Ntokozo Sithole.

Throughout his career, Big Zulu collaborated with esteemed artists like Damien Marley, Kwesta, Sjava, and Zakwe, co-creating chart-topping hits such as “100 Bars,” “Ang’Mazi Umama,” “Big Zulu Ama Million,” “Billion (Ama million remix),” “Lomhlaba Unzima,” and “Ushun Wenkabi.”

Expanding his horizon beyond music, Big Zulu ventured into television soap operas, gracing screens in prominent roles in shows like Isibaya, Uzalo, and Isithembiso.

South African rapper Big Zulu is in a relationship with Lebogang Makenete and is a devoted father to two children. His daughter is from his current relationship, while his son, Shaka, was born to Bulelwa Nazo.

However, in 2018, an unfortunate incident occurred when Big Zulu was arrested in Gauteng for an alleged assault involving one of his children’s mothers. This incident received criticism from a number of his fans.

Presently, he resides in Newtown with his girlfriend and their children.
